The two ships in this class were the logical development of the St. Laurent through the Restigouche and Mackenzie designs. They were fitted with the 3 inch 50 gun in advance of the 3 inch 70. They were the first Canadian warships designed from the keel up as helicopter carrying ships.

VARIANCES:

1) From 1998 to 1990, NIPIGON became  a test bed for the CANTASS system which was destined to be installed on the Halifax class frigate program.
2) ANNAPOLIS received a new lattice mast as a result of her 1985-1986 DELEX refit.
